Book Review: Becoming Sage by Kasi Alexander

October 11, 2011 2 Comments

Hi my beloved readers! I'm giving you my book review of Becoming Sage by Ms. Kasi Alexander. I want to that Ms. Kasi Alexander and Omnific publishing for giving me the chance to review this book.

Just a little warning: This book is for ADULTS only!

Now that we've got that out of the way... read on!

Kasi Alexander
Paperback and ebook
ISBN: 978-1-936305-71-1

Book Blurb:

With a failed marriage behind her, Jill Marten was looking to start a new chapter in her life. She had no idea that running into her old friend, Jessie, would unlock a whole new world. When she accepts Jessie's invitation to a party, in order to "try something completely different," it awakens a need to discover her place in a new community. Jessie, also known as sunni, is a submissive slave who is in a loving relationship with her Master, Sir Rune. When Rune and sunni ask Jill to be a part of their family, Jill begins her journey into submission, bondage, and polyamory, even as she questions everything that she has been taught about love and relationships. She begins to face her own desires and fears as she struggles with feelings of jealousy, inadequacy, and self-worth. Once she opens the door to a life she never imagined, a peek through the keyhole is no longer enough, and she must learn what it means to become sage.

Kasi Alexander's debut novel, Becoming sage, is the first installment in The Keyhole Series. An active member of the BDSM community, Kasi brings a true-to-life realism to her writing. This is not traditional erotica, but the series offers an intimate look into the lives of the men and women who live the BDSM lifestyle, in particular, the Master/slave dynamic.

My Thoughts:

'Becoming Sage' by Ms. Kasi Alexander is definitely one of my most unique reads. It was different and it would definitely give the reader a more realistic insight to BDSM. As most of us know, Ms Kasi Alexander is involved in BDSM lifestyle and this is probably why this book became much more intriguing and interesting because as a reader I know what I'm reading has a touch of reality.

I read 'Becoming Sage' in small doses because it was too intense. The three main characters in the story became more real to me because of the conflicting emotions they showed and felt. The complexity of their relationship was interesting. As I read along I saw the progress and falling and then the progress again of the relationship. At times it was hard to read, but I kept going because I wanna know how they resolve their issues.

You know, I've got to be honest and say that I couldn't decide whether I liked the characters or not. I guess, one could say that I have mixed emotions about them. Sage or Jill, is sometimes hard to like and that makes her more believable because the author didn't make her the perfect heroine. She has these very normal imperfections and her doubts and bitter feelings. Reading what she goes through as a third in the relationship is at times enlightening and other times just plain frustrating. Sunni, I admit that I liked her more than I did Sage. She's more fun, I guess. And I get Sunni more than I did Sage. While, Sir Rune... at first I just wanna go in the book and hit him because I didn't understand why he couldn't just give Sunni and Sage the affection they wanted, but later I came to understand his reasons. Plus, he was sweeter and more fun at the end of the book.

This book is absolutely a must read, if one is looking for a more realistic view of BDSM. I'm not gonna say that I agree with everything that was written in the book. There are some that I do agree with and there are some that I don't. And I guess that's what this is all about, seeing things in another person's perspective.

This book is not your typical romance, in fact there is little romance included in the book, but what I could definitely say is that, the book is simply about life and choices and how one lived with the choices she/he made. I really liked how Ms. Kasi Alexander wrote this book in a very honest way and without glossing over the details that would make some uncomfortable.

Two thumbs up to Ms. Kasi Alexander for writing a fiction that could bring a reader to a different reality from what most of us live in.

Fifty Shades Darker Blog Tour

Hey everyone! I'm so excited today! We have a very special guest today. She is one of my favorite authors and I'm so lucky to have her on my blog today.  Well, it's no other than E.L James, the fabulous author of Fifty Shades of Grey and Fifty Shades Darker. It's no secret how much I loved those two books and how eagerly I am waiting for the third installment of the series.. I'm close to begging them to release it but oh well, I just have to accept that it wouldn't be anytime soon. But for now let's give the spotlight to Miss EL James!

Thank you Lady Krishna for letting me hijack your blog.

My Husband is not Fifty

Whilst driving home this evening, far too fast as usual, I was listening to the radio.  It was some cheesy middle-of-the-road station that I secretly love but never own up to loving.  Rod Stewart’s ‘I Don’t Want To Talk About It’ (apt for a reluctant blogger eh?) started playing. Well, I’ve had a tough day… super tough as, I’ve become so distracted of late by all this book mullarky.  Anyway, I digress – what with the lyrics of that song, my exhaustion, and thinking about my job – well, soon there were tears falling down my face.  And I thought about my dear, dear husband, who would be at home with my supper on the table (seared fresh tuna, coleslaw and rocket salad) who puts up with all this crap – and is so supportive, and what do I give in return?  Nothing.

Honestly - I felt so selfish, and not worthy and the tears started afresh.  I was saved when a black van cut me up so I had to hoot him.  That snapped me out of it… but it does not negate the fact that my old man puts up with a great deal. The only plus side, on my part, is being good in bed (I wish!), the fact that I have a great sense of humour (I need it, to live with him) and the fact that he is such a grumpy old sod. My goodness, he could take grumpy to a whole Fifty level.  Not that Fifty is based in any way on my dear hubs (shame eh?)  So I thought I would take this opportunity, in print, to tell whoever reads this, that I am a lucky cow when it comes to husbands.  I chose well.

He is the only man who can have me rolling around on the floor, helpless… with laughter, usually at myself.  He can be merciless at that, though I have to say he hasn’t done it recently – perhaps if he reads this it will inspire him.

Throughout writing about Fifty he has helped.  Not only did he roll his eyes and say “You want to do what?” and oblige in the name of research, but he proofread and beta’d all the chapters.  If I ever got stuck with a plot point I could always talk to him and he was beyond helpful; never pushing an idea but just being a fantastic sounding board. You see ladies and gentleman, my husband is a writer; a real, professional, makes-a-good-living-out-of-it writer, and he knows his stuff.

I remember going on a one-day fiction seminar when I first started writing – it was over-subscribed and over-crowded and afterwards I thought, jeez they’ve not told me anything that my husband hasn’t told me.  Basically: who is your hero, what’s his/her agenda and what gets in the way?  That’s it in a nutshell; it’s all about conflict.  If you have conflict you have a story.  No conflict, who’s interested?  So, with Fifty during the first book we see our heroine conflicted.  She wants ‘more’, and he just wants to f*ck her into submission – literally – loads of potential for conflict there.  With the second book the conflict comes from them trying to redefine their relationship, and from outside… from Fifty’s past, but I won’t talk too much about that, in case I give anything away.

Of course, I also learnt a great deal about conflict from my hubs. But that’s another story…

Oh what a lovely post Miss E.L James! Now I want your husband! kidding! I don't have death wish and I absolutely would love to stay on your good graces. Haha. Now, kidding aside, thank you so much Miss E.L James for sharing a part of your life with me and the readers of this blog. It was a very interesting post for us because it let's us see the human behind these two great books, and it gives us a glimpse of what your life might be like.

And I also want to thank you for making us all so envious of your luck in having a supportive and patient husband. You are so lucky!

Now we know, how you could write an erotic romance novel like Fifty Shades of Grey and Fifty Shades Darker.. well, you obviously are very much in love and inspired!

Book Blurb:

Daunted by the singular sexual tastes and dark secrets of the beautiful, tormented young entrepreneur Christian Grey, Anastasia Steele has broken off their relationship to start a new career with a Seattle publishing house.

But desire for Christian still dominates her every waking thought, and when he proposes a new arrangement, Anastasia cannot resist. They rekindle their searing sensual affair, and Anastasia learns more about the harrowing past of her damaged, driven, and demanding Fifty Shades.

While Christian wrestles with his inner demons, Anastasia must confront her anger and envy of the women who came before her and make the most important decision of her life.

Erotic, sparkling and suspenseful, Fifty Shades Darker is the irresistibly addictive second part of the Fifty Shades trilogy.

Book Review:Fifty Shades Darker by EL James

Erotic, sparkling and suspenseful, Fifty Shades Darker is the irresistibly addictive second part of the Fifty Shades trilogy.

My Thoughts:

"Fifty is back!"

Fifty Shades Darker is the most awaited second installment in E.L James' Fifty Shades  trilogy. An intense erotic romance that would make you a willing prisoner inside the book. A reader will be tasting every emotion the character feels.

It started where 'Fifty Shades of Grey' ended. Ana Steele was having a hard time dealing with her 'break up' with Christian. She misses him terribly and wondering if she made the right decision. When Christian contacted her wanting to talk she gives in and she realized that they are both suffering. And so they got back together. They decided to try the 'vanilla' kind of relationship. Ana is worried that she's not enough for Christian, that she is not what he really needs.
So the story starts to unfold from there.
The whole book is about how they surpass the trials that was thrown on their way.

I gotta say that this book is even better than the last one. In here we get to see a different side of Christian. We get to see his cute, boyish playful side, but if you think that  he lost his edge and darkness and his hot bossiness.. nope! He's still the Fifty that we love! But now, he's more than the dominant who cannot commit into a normal relationship. Christian showed so much more emotions in here. Christian as a vulnerable man scared to loose the woman he loves is just so lovable... I just want to hug him and make him mine! We also get to see Christian as the boy who went through so much, the boy who thought he didn't deserve the love his family have for him. And with all of these, I understood why he became the way he is.

The Ana in this book seemed so much more mature than the Ana in the first book. Now she, knows how to fight for what she wants. She knows how to voice out her opinions. Don't get me wrong, she's not perfect and at times she annoys the living hell out of me but it's part of how her character grew.. from the innocent Ana who gets intimidated easily into  the Ana, a woman who loves Christian fiercely and yet not afraid to level up with him is interesting to see.

The other thing that I loved most about this book is how Ana and Christian's relationship progressed. Their chemistry together is sizzling hot! Their interactions are sometimes heavy and intense and emotional but other times they're just so cute and adorable that I can't help but smile. They're email exchange and SHOUTY CAPITALS is just so freaking adorable. I feel so giddy whenever I read that part. They are one of my favorite couples in the fiction world.

The plot is greatly executed in the book! The pace of the story wasn't boringly slow and it wasn't confusingly fast. It was done right without any dull moment. And I was absolutely hooked!

Overall, this book is one of my best reads. Once I started reading it I couldn't stop! The intensity of the book will surely astonish and captivate you. For me, this book is more than just an erotic romance because it has a depth that could make the reader feel and experience its passion and heat and yet it also has the power to make a reader laugh out loud with the characters' adorableness, cry because of their pain and melt because of their sweetness.

Great job Miss E.L James! I'm looking forward to reading the next one!
