Claire Deveraux is perfection at it’s best. She is beautiful, intelligent and unaware she just became Jessie Boone’s conquest as revenge against her boyfriend, Forbes Henderson. Like her flawless performance as the perfect daughter and student, Claire’s production of being the perfect girlfriend has everyone fooled, except Jessie Boone, and she fears this tattooed bad boy will see her secret desire to explore his crude threats and promises to rock her perfect world. If she decides to give in to one uninhibited moment with Jessie, will she learn too late that it was all an act of vengeance or will Jessie learn the taste of first love is sweeter than that of revenge?
My Thoughts:
Going Under is very nice and fun read. It's a bit different from the other YA's because it's not empty or shallow. It has depth and it would make you think of what some unfortunate young people go through.
What I liked:
- The plot of the story is something I really enjoyed. My favorite part was the intense angst, the author wrote it well.
- The characters are really memorable. Jessie and Claire are fun to get to know. Sometimes, you see yourselves in their position and you'll tell yourself that once, you've felt the way they did at the story too.
- The oozing chemistry between Jessie and Claire is impossible to ignore. Their romance was really enjoyable to read. It was like you're watching them antagonize each other first and then you watch them get close and their feeling for each other gets intense with each scene. The build up was nice.
- The changing of perspectives. I love seeing through Jessie and Claire. Their thoughts and feelings were clear and written well. I think Ms. Georgia Cates has captured those feeling of a teenager perfectly. The frustrations, confusions and hang ups that they felt through out the book were written in a way that a reader would feel them and empathize with these characters.
What I didn't liked:
- The ending was abrupt. (The author fixed this. She posted another chapter on her blog and this chapter would also be included in the book. I think it was very gracious of her to listen to her readers).
- I didn't like Claire at the first few chapters, maybe because of her continues whining that they didn't see the real her but this changed after a while. I guess, I didn't understand her before.
Overall, I think this book is a nice quick and fun read. It would be perfect for the teenagers and for the teenagers at heart who wants to read a high school themed book that has depth, angst and a very cute romance without loosing its incredible intensity.
